Topic: Abraham the Priest and Prophet pt.1

Introduction: Our desire this month has been to know the secrets of Abraham that made him so thick and emulate him to the glory of God. Today, we shall be looking at the life of Abraham as a priest and a prophet even at a time when there were no institutional worship centers and ministerial body ordaining people into ministry. Abraham was recognized at that time by God as a prophet. His priestly ministry can best be described by his habits and what he did claiming obedience to God.

Abraham the Priest: Who is a priest? A priest is defined by the Farlex Dictionary of the English language as one who officiates at the altar or performs the rites of sacrifice. This person acts as a mediator between men and the divinity or the gods in any form of religion. In our case here; the person who mediates between men and the one true God of the universe.

The question is how does this describe Abraham? First we must establish that as at the time of Abraham, man was already cursed and under sin with the death penalty when the ancestral parents of the human race sinned against God in Gen.3. See Gen.2:16-17.

At this time, Abraham was really seeking the true God. He had come to terms with the truth that neither the Sun, Moon nor Stars nor any kind of creature which people worshipped during his time qualified to answer the name: “God.” So he decided to pray and find out for himself who the real God was. When he eventually got a response from God because God spoke to him giving him directions for his life which he promptly followed, he was in no doubt that he had found the true God. In leading him, God taught him to raise altars to him so that anywhere he went, he kept raising altars to God. In Genesis 15, God details to him an altar he was to raise to him and what sacrifices he was to make on it. In response to Abraham’s obedience, God came down on the alter and released his blessing there which transcended time into eternity and affected all the lineage of Abraham forever provided they served the Lord as Abraham did. Let us see some examples of his priestly habits.

1.     In Gen.12:7, we see where the Lord eventually told him where he was sending him because at the beginning, he was just told to go to an undisclosed location. Here God confirms the location and promised to give it to him and his seed. Here, he built an altar to the Lord who appeared to him. When he did that, he was exercising as a priest of God.

2.     In Gen.12:8, he relocated to another part of the land and built another altar there. It is noteworthy that here we are told that he built another altar where he called on the name of the Lord. Thus altars were the ground where he connected with heaven from earth.  

3.     In Gen.13:4, after his brief sojourn in Egypt, Abraham returned to Bethel where he had previously built an altar and called on the name of the Lord there again.

4.     In Gen.13:18, Abraham relocated again and came to Mamre which was in Hebron and built an altar there to the Lord. From here it is evident that it was the habit of Abraham to keep raising altars wherever he dwelt in the Promised Land. He never raised an altar in Egypt and God did not permit him to go back to Egypt. The next time his descendants went to Egypt, they were to eventually become enslaved there. See Gen.15:13.

5.     In Gen.14:18-20, he came in contact with Melchizedek king of Salem also known as the priest of the Most High God. He was obviously a higher priest than Abraham because the bible says the less is blessed of the greater. So he blessed Abraham and declared him to be the possessor of heaven and earth. By that blessing, Abraham became the custodian of the wealth of the world and an agent of God from heaven that is why he was possessor of heaven and earth. Thus the relevance of Abraham is recognized by heaven within time and for all eternity. See Heb.7:1-28 noting verses 4-8; 19; 21-22 & 26-28. See also, Heb.5:6 and Ps.110:1, 4 with Acts 2:22-36.

6.     In Gen.15, we see an account of where God instructed Abraham to build an altar to Him. Here, God gave him a list of the items to be sacrificed and how he was to prepare the sacrifice. Abraham did as he was told and God came down on the altar and covenanted with Abraham and blessed him and his offspring.  This was the usual practice. It was during the dispensation of Moses that we were told the details of the altar and what the sacrifices on the altar meant. Sadly, everything God did, Satan tries to copy with the intent to deceive man and abuse it so that instead of the blessing any man who does anything similar with the devil comes under a curse. This is because when the devil comes on demonic altars, he brings a curse with him and the result is that it would enable him to legally fulfill his mission to steal, kill and destroy. See Jn.10:10 and 1Cor.10:16, 20-21.

7.     As a priest, Abraham received instructions from God on behalf of his people and he immediately implemented them. For instance, God gave him the circumcision instruction in Gen.17 and he promptly obeyed. Today, it is still being practiced in the nation of Israel which is the offspring of the descendants of the seed of Abraham who inherited the blessing. See vs.9-14 & 26-27.

8.     As a priest Abraham was able to intercede for Sodom and Gomorrah in an attempt to prevent the Lord from destroying the land because of their sin. Unfortunately, the land was more corrupt than Abraham had anticipated therefore his request did not match the verdict so the land was judged and became extinct. See Gen.18:23-33; Isa.1:9; Mt.11:23.

We shall draw the curtain on this message here today for want of time and space. We shall continue next week with the part two of this topic by looking at Abraham the prophet.

Meanwhile looking at the priesthood of Abraham would have shown us that Abraham left us a good example in the sense that anywhere he went he ensured he raised an altar to the Lord there. This brought God’s presence to the place and his blessing was also released there. The blessing of Abraham is still speaking today. Someone reading this would like to have this kind of quality walk with God; if that person is you, you can start right away by receiving Jesus Christ into your life as your Saviour and Lord. If you want this, you can say the following prayer out loud in faith and the Holy Spirit will take you up from there at once:

Heavenly Father,

Have mercy on me a sinner. Today, I believe that Jesus died for me and you raised Him from the dead for my Justification. I therefore declare that Jesus Christ is my Saviour and Lord and from today, I renounce the fatherhood of Satan and embrace Jesus Christ as my Saviour and Lord. Thank you for this father in Jesus’ name! Amen.

Topic: Abraham’s Relational Life

Introduction: Our desire this month has been to know the secrets of Abraham and to learn his way of life from him as he exemplifies an outstanding life of faith which God Himself has enjoined us in Isa.51:1-2 to follow. Last week we looked at eleven (11) qualities of Abraham which were the attributes that set him apart from others.  This week we will be looking at his relational life.

Relational means concerning the way in which two or more people or things are connected; of or relating to kinship.  One other quality that was established from the outcome of what we learned last week is that Abraham was a good communicator.  He related well with God and people and therefore maintained relationships relevant to His purpose.

Let us look at the types of relationships Abraham established and maintained:

1.     He was a family man - This reflected in his having a good wife and maintaining a healthy relationship with her. In the New Testament, she was even sighted by Apostle Peter as an example of the kind of wife godly women should emulate. See 1Pet.3:1-6 and Gen. 12:1.

2.     He was such a great husband: His wife had no problem following him even in the most uncomfortable circumstances. In response to his genuine affection for her, she even referred to him as her lord! See 1Pet.3:5-6; Gen. 12:5, 11-13 and Eph. 5:28.

3.     He was a father indeed to his children and household to the point that they all followed his footsteps. For instance before having any child of his own, he raised his nephew as his own son and led him as a secure leader which in turn compelled him to follow Abraham on his divine journey. See Gen.12:4 and 13:1; Gen.18:19; Prov.13:22 and Prov.4:1-4.

4.     Those that stayed with him also prospered. This is because by the blessing of God upon his life, he was able to replicate prosperity in others who followed him. Lot so prospered that their substance grew beyond their ability to stay together.  They had to separate at Abraham’s instance. Gen. 13:5-9 and Ps.92:12-15.

5.     He submitted to the Lord via his priest - Melchizedek. He tithed and partook of the Holy Communion in a figure when he received bread and wine from him. Gen. 14:18-20; Heb. 7:1-2.

6.     He was legacy minded and this guaranteed that the blessing was passed on to the next generation. A legacy minded person would invest their lives in preparing the next generation for what God wants for them because God is transgenerational his promises usually exceed the current generation so that He could fulfill his word beyond the first generation. Gen. 22:15-18; 26:1-5; 28:1-4; Acts 3:25.

7.     He was wise in handling relationships when they went sour.  He let God tell him what to do and how. See the example of Lot and Hagar. Gen.13:5-11; 16:3-9; 21:8-14

8.     He raised others so the best of them could be displayed to enable them fulfill their purpose. See the example of the war he fought using men he raised in his house and teaming up with his friends referred to as his Confederates. Gen. 14:4-16

9.     He was a strategic planner and warrior which placed a demand of excellent interpersonal skills on him. This is why he was able to have some friends referred to as his confederates. They went to fight the war that delivered Lot his nephew from the enemies of Sodom and Gomorrah. He not only worked physically, he also did spiritually; he tithed. See Gen.14:1-24 and Heb.7:1-9.

10.            The presence of the Lord was so much on Abraham that Abimelech asked him to enter into a covenant with him so that their relationship will continue between their offspring and future generations. Gen. 21:22-27

He grew to become a war general by his effective leadership ability over the souls he won. See Gen.14 which we looked at earlier talking about the story of the war Abraham fought.

How he managed and resolved conflicts in his house and neighborhood:

·        He was a peaceful person and shunned strife.  When he noticed that there was strife between his herdsmen and that of Lot, he told Lot that there should not be strife between them as they were brethren.  Abraham told Lot that they must go their separate ways to create enough room for their large household and flocks.  He gave Lot the right to make first choice of where he wanted to move to and Abraham went the other way.  They separated peacefully and without any bad feelings towards each other. This is why Abraham was able to go and rescue Lot later in Gen.14 when Lot got into trouble. Also, when God was to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah Abraham took the time to intercede for the place because of Lot and his compassion for the people of the place. See Gen.18:17- 33 and Gen. 13:5-12.

·        When Abraham was informed that Lot was in serious trouble he discussed with his group of friends that agreed to help him.  He also informed his personal trained servants and they all went to rescue Lot, defeating the enemy.  Abraham was always ready to help his brother any time he was in trouble and involved trusted people to assist him. Gen. 14:10-16

In what way have the relationships of Abraham affected us and our generation?

·        His relationship with God was the most important thing in his life because he always obeyed instructions promptly. This is why we are his seed today through Christ. God was able to come into this world through the lineage of Abraham because of his legacy mindset and today, the world is still being blessed by the seed of Abraham which is Christ Jesus. See Gal.3:16.

·        Because of his faith and obedience, the blessings of Abraham transcends generations. Forever, the blessing of Abraham would still be relevant.

·        He believed in team work. He knew that the accomplishment of many is greater than the accomplishment of one, so he raised a team of men involving his household servants and friends to help him when the need arose for him to fight a battle to save the lives of some loved ones. See Gen.14.

·        His relationship with his children shows how parents should train up their children. When he passed on, in spite of the fact that Ismael was sent away earlier, he teamed up with Isaac to bury their father. Also, because of his protection of the Covenant for Isaac, he sent away the children of the wife he married after Sarah’s demise. Her name was Keturah. See Gen.25:1-6 and Prov. 22:6.

What could Abraham have done differently to benefit our present generation?

He should not have agreed to Sarah’s suggestion of having a child with Hagar in doubt of God’s ability to give them one together. Eventually, they still had to believe God for the son and had him; so Ishmael was unnecessary. See Gen.16:1-2: 17:15-19 and 21:1-7. See also Heb.11:11-12.

Some mistakes he made and how we can avoid making the same mistakes

·        When the Lord told Abraham to leave his country, he should not have taken Lot.  Lot became a distraction until they were separated.  When God gives us an instruction we should endeavor to find out exactly what we are to do before we start to avoid any unnecessary distraction. Gen. 12:1-4; 13:14-15.

·        Not telling the total truth in a situation for fear of unfavorable response.  It is better to be truthful from the beginning. Their situation though was quite challenging and understandably they were actually siblings. Gen.12:10-20; see also Ps.15:1-5

Topic: The qualities of Abraham that distinguished him

Introduction: Our desire this month is to get to know the secret of Abraham and to learn from him and live in such a way as to leave behind his kind of enduring legacies when the time comes for us to bid farewell to time if the Lord tarries. Last week we saw what Abraham did and today, we are going to be looking at the qualities that made him to stand out in his generation and posterity.

The qualities of Abraham: Qualities are a peculiar and essential character, an inherent feature, a degree of excellence, a distinguishing attribute etc. in other words; the qualities of Abraham are his distinguishing attributes or the attributes that set him apart from others in his lifetime so that we still celebrate him thousands of years after he is gone from time. The reason we are looking at this is to find out who and what he was that made him live such a glorious life that has penned him down in history as the faith champion that he is today. Then we can walk in his footsteps as we intend to do beginning from this month. The following are therefore some of his attributes that we can glean from the word of God:

1.     He was a man of faith: We learn from the beginning of the story of Abraham’s life that what gave him favour with God was that he believed God even in the most unlikely circumstance so that God credited it to him for righteousness. He became the first person to receive the gift of righteousness by faith. See Gen.15:6; Rm.4:1-3 and Heb.11:8.

2.     He was passionately obedient to God’s word: Every time God spoke to him, he was prompt to do what he was instructed to do if it was an instruction. For instance, when he was told to sacrifice his only son, he promptly obeyed even though it was to cost him a three days journey and he therefore had three days within which to change his mind but didn’t. Eventually, it all turned out to be a test and Abraham was sensitive enough to know it and received another instruction that has gone down in history as a lesson to us all to stay sensitive to divine guidance so that we can always amend in the event of any adjustment to God’s instructions. See Gen.22:2 and 12-18. Please understand that if Abraham had not heard the second instruction in this story to use a ram caught in the bush in exchange for Isaac, he would have slain his son for nothing.

3.     He was an intercessor: An intercessor is someone who stands on behalf of another to plead their case before a higher authority figure. In the case of Abraham, he stood for instance; on behalf of Sodom and Gomorrah when the Lord told him he was going to judge the city. We can find this account in Gen.18:17-33.

4.     He was generous: He was so generous that he even welcomed angels without knowing they were angels before he served them. For instance the angels that brought him the message of the wife’s conception and birth of Isaac appeared to him as ordinary travelling men. Abraham in his characteristic hospitable manner welcomed them and washed their feet and fed them. Then, they delivered their message from the Lord to him and as a matter of fact, the Lord was one of them. See Gen.18:1-5 – Note that when the Lord appeared to him here, all he saw were three men. His usual generous habit showed up and he got blessed.  

5.     He was a resilient man: A resilient person is one who never gives up no matter what. Abraham was a resilient man. This is why he never gave up in spite of the length of time it took for the promise of God to him to come to pass. The first time God promised him a son by his wife was twenty five years before Isaac was born yet he waited and received the promised son. Many in his shoes would have given up before it came to pass, but not Abraham. See Gen.12:1-6; 15:1-6; 17:15-21; Rm.4:17-22 and 21:1-3.

6.     He was a warrior: Abraham trained three hundred of his servants for war and when the time came, with them and his friends; he routed the army of four countries and delivered his Nephew Lot from their hands and all that they carted away in victory was also restored to Abraham and his confederates. See Gen.14.

7.     He was a lover of God: A lover of God is one who fears God and if a person walks in the fear of God, he or she would determine to live in such a way as to please the Lord all the time. For instance the bible says in Prov.8:13 that the fear of the Lord is to hate evil, pride and arrogance. Abraham walked in the fear of God so much which is why God cut an enduring covenant with him which has outlived him to many generations of his offspring.  

8.     He was a friend of God: A real friend is someone who will always be in agreement with you on principle and never contradict you. Please understand that this is a heart thing; it is not paying lip service to friendship. Abraham always agreed with God even though he experienced times of weaknesses that made him look like he wasn’t. God who cannot lie testified concerning Abraham in Isa.41:8 that Abraham was his friend.

9.     He was a responsible parent: God said concerning Abraham that he knew him, that he would order his children to walk in the ways of God so that he would bring his covenant to pass in their lives. The proof of this is the existence of Israel as a nation today. See Gen.18:16-19.

10.                        He walked in the ways of God: Truth that he walked in the ways of God is testified to by God when he kept calling Abraham his servant. In other words, God called Abraham his servant because his life bore the testimony that he was walking in the ways of the Lord. See Isa.41:8.

11.                        He lived in such a way that God recognized him as a mentor to others: In the book of Isaiah the Lord told the children of Israel through the prophet to look to Abraham their father and Sarah that bore them. He said that he called him alone and made him a great nation in fulfillment of His promise.  See Isa.51:1-2.

Topic: Who Abraham was and what he did

Introduction: Our desire this month is to get to know the secret of Abraham and find out why his life has left us such a legacy that can best be described as eternally enduring. The best way we can do this is to find out who the man Abraham was and what he did that has captured the entire world’s attention that his seed cannot be treated with indifference; they are either well favored or extremely hated due to envy and jealousy.

The violence and bitter hatred of the world towards the seed of Abraham today is not unconnected with the devil’s campaign against God since before man was created when he sought to exalt himself to the class of God to no avail and was cast out of heaven because of his rebellion. Today after more than six thousand years following the creation of man, that bitterness has grown exponentially to the point that the entire world is like sitting on a keg of gun powder not knowing what the enemies of Israel may pull out in terrorizing the world next.

Abraham the blessed and blessing: The story of Abraham opens up in Gen.12:1 with the sentence: “the Lord hath said unto Abram…” this communicates to us that Abraham was already having a relationship with God to the point of being instructed by God to depart from his current location to an unknown destination. Abraham obeyed God even without knowing where he was bound for. The writer of the letter to the Hebrews in Heb.11:8 puts the account this way:

“By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing wither he went.”

God promised to bless Abraham and make him a blessing and then promised that through his seed, all the families of the earth shall be blessed. This makes Abraham and his seed a blessing to the entire world.

In Gal.3:16 Apostle Paul makes us understand that the seed referred to here is the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore the gospel that was before preached to Abraham is that his seed would inherit the land. And through His seed all the earth would the blessed.

This gives us an idea of the kind of man Abraham was; he was a man of faith. So as we look into the life of Abraham this month, it should not be a surprise to any of us that we shall be looking at a great example of the faith of God.

What Abraham did:

1.     He cultivated an intimate relationship with God. This is why it is said that Abraham walked with God. He was even called the friend of God. In fact God revealed things he wanted to do to him because of this like he said in Gen.18:17-18; Gen.17:1 and Isa.41:8.

2.     He sought to know the ways of God: He asked God questions when God visited him and from the answers God gave him, he was able to learn of the ways of God and walk in it. A good example is his encounter with God in Gen.15 that led to his learning to raise an altar to God which helped him to bring down God’s blessing on earth through divine visitations at those altars.

3.     He walked in the ways of God: This explains why he is until date acknowledged the father of faith. See Isa.55:8; Gal.3:29; Heb.11:8-19 and Gal.4:28.

4.     He believed God: When God told him that he would make him a father of many nations, he believed God and received the gift of righteousness thereby. As time has gone his faith has proved very beneficial because there is indeed a nation of people who are the offspring of the promise of God to Abraham and the seed of Abraham which is Christ has through his death, burial and resurrection given access to the entire world to become children of the promise to Abraham.  See Gal.3:13-14; Gen.15:4-6 and Rm.4:3.

5.     He obeyed God: His obedience was prompt, delightsome and total. As far as God is concerned, delayed obedience is disobedience. This is why procrastination to do the word of God is looked upon with disfavour by God. When God called Abraham to leave for an unknown destination, he went promptly. When God told him to circumcise all the male of his household, he promptly obeyed. This won the heart of God to him. See Gen.12:1-6; 17:10-14 and 23.

6.     He trusted God above all odds: Apostle Paul writing about the incident of the faith of Abraham in Rm.4 said that Abraham believed in hope against hope that he should become the father of many nations. See Rm.4:17-22 and Gen.21:1-4.

7.     He became the pioneer of the righteousness which is of faith: when God promised him a son in his old age with a barren wife who was past the age of procreation, he believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness. See Gen.15: 1-6 and Rm.4:1-6.

8.     He was a soul winner: Note that when departing from his father’s house to go to the land of promise, he did not go alone; he went with all the souls he had gotten including Lot his nephew. See Gen.12:5.  

We shall draw the curtain on this message here for today. Meanwhile to someone reading this blog that is yet to know, you can become a seed of Abraham today by faith if you so desire. This is the only means by which we can actualize the destiny God has for us. Welcome to the month of October 2017: Our month of The Blessing

“And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families in the earth be blessed.” Gen.12:2-3

And if ye be Christ’ then are ye Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise. Gal.3:29

Beloved family, I welcome you to this glorious Month of October which the Lord has graciously called our Month of The Blessing. This is indeed a glorious month because in the midst of the negative reports all around the world, the Lord is bringing to our remembrance this great truth that we are indeed a blessed people in Christ Jesus.

Last month, the Lord caused us to remember that we are not the same people we were before we came into His family through the Lord Jesus Christ. We were made to see that we have been adopted into the family of God through the seed for Abraham – Jesus Christ. We were able to see also how it all began for man and why we needed to be born again.

This month, we are blessed again to be reminded of the blessing by the Lord. What exactly is The Blessing and why are we in it? The word blessing means empowered to prosper; or succeed. It is the opposite of the curse which means empowered to fail. The blessing is the only cure for the curse. As we leant last month, the curse came upon humanity through sin and the Lord had to come and paid the penalty for our sin and obtained eternal redemption for us. Anyone who receives this great unspeakable gift called Jesus Christ automatically gains access into the blessing of Abraham. From our studies last month, we came to learn that Abraham became the custodian of the blessing allocated to mankind through his covenant relationship with God. Through him, God sent the Messiah in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ into this world. He is the seed of Abraham through whom all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

The question we want to ask and answer this month is what made Abraham thick? Why is it that of every man on earth in his lifetime, he was the one who walked with God and God chose to bless and make him a blessing? First I must say I observe a grace of divine election is the reason for his call from what is written in the bible because we were not given the information of the state of his heart as at when God called him. Although we later got to know from Gen.18:17-19 that he was a legacy minded person and God wanted someone who would order his offspring after them to walk in his ways so that he can bring his word to pass in their lives because He is a transgenerational God.

To this end, in our teaching series this month, we shall be looking at a theme I tag: “Walking in the footsteps of Abraham”; from here we seek to understand why Abraham grew to enjoy so much favour with God to the point he was later called a friend of God and why his legacies are still all around the world today. Recently, I was listening to the debate of the prime Minister of Israel in the recent United Nations General Assembly and was left in no doubt of the word of God concerning the blessing of Abraham as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sought to show the world how much of a blessing the nation of Israel has been to the world and that the world seems to be coming to terms with this truth as it stands today. It is worthy of note that the blessing of Abraham was inherited by Isaac and that of the two offspring of Isaac, Jacob who later became known as Israel inherited the blessing.

Today, Israel has grown into a nation and despite all odds are calling the shot in every area of life on earth. I consider myself to be greatly privileged to be adopted into the family of God through the Lord Jesus Christ and am therefore now a seed of Abraham by faith and an heir of the covenant and a joint heir with the Lord Jesus Christ. Truth be told, this is God’s pattern for man’s prosperity. Our personal preferences as far as the God we choose to serve notwithstanding, access to God is impossible without going through Jesus Christ the seed of Abraham. Someone reading this blog today may have been desirous of being blessed in this way without success. I have good news for you. You can take advantage of this glorious offer from God by getting born again into God’s family and you can do so right away by saying the following prayer out loud in faith and you will be born again and become a joint heir with the Lord Jesus Christ. If you want to do so now please say the following prayer out loud in faith and you will actualize the promise:

Heavenly Father,

Have mercy on me a sinner. Today, I believe that Jesus died for me and you raised Him from the dead for my Justification. I therefore declare that Jesus Christ is my Saviour and Lord and from today, I renounce the fatherhood of Satan and embrace Jesus Christ as my Saviour and Lord. Thank you for this father in Jesus’ name! Amen.
