Topic:  The Place of Visions and Dreams in Destiny
Introduction: Last week, we saw the nature of dreams and visions with the aim of enhancing our ability to more easily recognize the dreams and visions that come from the Lord. Today, we are going to be looking at what role visions and dreams play in helping us to fulfill our destinies. Let me quickly say here that dreams and visions are not the sole means by which God speaks but they constitute one of the most common ways he speaks because most people can more easily receive them than some other means by which God speaks. For example God said in Numbers 12:6-8 that while He commonly speaks to his prophets in visions and dreams, there are a set apart few like Moses to whom He speaks apparently face to face. So while we can receive the blessings of visions and dreams, we can also press for more on our journey through deepening our relationship with Him.
Today however, we shall be majoring on what role God’s leading through dreams and visions play in our destiny’s journey.
A possible distinction between dreams and visions: While the two can be taken together as one of God’s ways of communication with us, there are slight variations between both.
Whereas visions usually happen when we are physically conscious with all our five senses intact [Acts10:1-7 & Lk.1:11-22], dreams sometimes happen in our sleep and these types are known as visions of the night like the bible shows us in Job 33:14-15 and Daniel 2:19.
The roles played by Visions and Dreams in Destiny: Last month while looking at our series on destiny, we established that destiny is the predetermined course of events in our lives determined by the choices we make [Deu.30:19]. We also saw that destiny refers to the journey we make through time. In light of this, let us see the role played by visions and dreams in our destiny’s journey as shown us by the word of God so that we can understand how to engage them for our benefits.
First, visions and dreams would reveal God to us thus settling any confusion we may have had about our source. We cannot ever experience a glorious destiny without a divine revelation of our true source to us. Since the fall of man from glory, Satan has confused mankind by introducing religion to him. All that can be known of God is only accessible by a divine revelation. A major way God has often revealed Himself is through visions and dreams. See the example of Moses in the burning bush incidence in Ex.3:1-6 and the story of Saul who became Paul in Acts 9:1-5. Another good example is Jacob’s dream in Gen.28:12-15 where God reveals himself to Jacob on his flight from his brother’s wrath when he escaped to Padan Haran. Note that until God is revealed to you, your destiny would be hanging without a guarantee of fulfilment. When God reveals himself to you, you have to move on from there to get him to tell you your purpose before you can start running on you destiny’s path [see Acts 9:4-6]
Second, Visions and dreams would reveal God’s plans and purposes to us generally and individually: By this means among others, we have the bible put together which is a compilation of the revelation of God and His plans and purpose. As we look at dreams and visions in relation to God’s plan, we can learn about His general plan for mankind and his universe and also learn about our specific roles in it. It is only when we know what role we are expected to play in God’s big plan that our glorious destinies can commence otherwise, our lives would be a wasted journey in time. See Acts 10:6-10 and Gen.15:12-16.
Third, Visions and dreams also constitute a means by which God reveals our individual identities and potentials to usThe journey of destiny begins with vision revealing God and his plans and purposes for us to us. This is why we have earlier established that vision is the foundation of destiny. See the example of Moses in Ex.7:1 and that of Gideon in Judges 6:12-23 and that of Jeremiah in Jer.1:4-5 and Acts 9:10-16.
Finally, visions and dreams help along with the word of God to guide us all through our journey in time until we get to its end when we would hear God’s commendation saying well done good and faithful servant. See Matt.1:18-25 and Acts 27:21-25.
We shall stop here for now. Next week, we shall continue by looking at how to actualize our God given visions and dreams. Meanwhile, the first step to receiving vision that guarantees that we would run on the right path of destiny is that we must be born again. If you are yet to be born again, please say the following prayer out loud and you will be saved:
Heavenly Father,
Have mercy on me a sinner. Today, I believe that Jesus died for me and you raised Him from the dead for my Justification. I therefore declare that Jesus Christ is my Saviour and Lord and from today, I renounce the fatherhood of Satan and embrace Jesus Christ as my Saviour and Lord. Thank you for this father in Jesus’ name! Amen.
