What Glory is and How to benefit from the Glory of God Part 1

Introduction: Glory could be defined as the quality of a person or thing which secures general praise or honor. It is the quality that brings or gives renown. It is all that one is and has. God’s glory is therefore all that God is and has. It is his quality that brings Him general praise and honor. With this understanding, we shall be looking at some qualities of God that commands our praise and causes us to honor Him above all. Later, we shall be looking at how to take advantage of God’s Glory.

 Five qualities of God that demonstrates His Glory

All the qualities of God are glorious but because we cannot claim to know all there is to know of him, we shall be looking at five of His qualities that He has revealed to us that always makes us want to honor Him.

1.     His holiness: The entire atmosphere of heaven declares the glory of God and what makes Him so glorious in His personality which is his holiness. He is highly set apart from all others and is the only one who has a right to look down on all. He is the high and lofty one who sits in the circle of the earth and controls all the affairs on earth. His glory is demonstrates so much in heaven and on earth and all of His creation that all the saints and angels and every other creature in glory could say to him is HOLY, HOLY, HOLY! [See Isa.6:1-4; Rev.4:8]. He is so glorious in holiness that wherever He reveals His manifest presence becomes holy [until today, Mount Sinai and the nation and people in Israel are still holy (Ex.3:1-6)]; whoever he reveals Himself to become holy, whatever and whoever is used to honor Him becomes holy. Whoever He calls to serve Him becomes holy and honorable when they obey. Whoever decides to separate himself or herself to God becomes holy as an act of their will. We must distinguish here between the true God and others pretending to be God.

First we must understand that He declared the end from the beginning. Then he causes us to begin to take the journey. This is why He gives us vision. As we pursue the vision, we begin to enjoy a glorious destiny and His word [Son] and Spirit keep us on course in the journey until we arrive at His intended destination where He is already waiting ahead of us. [Isa.46:9-10; Rev.13:8]

Second, He is the one who created the Heavens and the earth by His Spirit and His word. [Gen.1:1-3, Ps.33:6, 9]

Third, He is the self-existing one who was never created but who created all persons and things. [Col.1:12-19, Isa.46:9-10]

Fourth, He is the all sufficient one who does not require help from anyone. [Ps.50:10, 12]

Fifth, He is the one at whose beckoning the heavens and the earth and all the planets and spirit beings known and unknown to us present themselves. [Isa.5:26; 7:18]

Sixth He is the only one who makes rich and does not add any sorrow with it. In other words, He can bless a man without any strings attached which the man has not chosen of his own free will. [Prov.10:22]

Seventh, He is the most secure person in the entire universe. Even when Lucifer rebelled, he let his angels fight him. He never lifted a hand. At the end just an angel will chain Lucifer and throw him in hell. [See Rev.12:7-12; 20:1-15]

Eighth, He is so notoriously truthful that everyone wants to associate with him because they know they can count on His integrity. Sadly though, many have not met him because they have been deceived to believe he is something or someone else or that He does not exist. [Titus 1:2, Isa.55:8-11]

Ninth, He has a son whose name is Jesus the Christ who is forever the most influential man who walked the sands of time because of His holiness. [John 3:16, Matthew 3:16-17] 

The above qualities among many others too numerous to mention make Him so attractive that we all want Him on our side even when we cannot measure up to these standards.

2.     His word: Another quality that Separates God from others is His word. His word is the most powerful word in the entire universe because of its integrity. Integrity means moral excellence and truthfulness. This is so important that He alone has the audacity to say that not one of His words would return to him unproductive. [See Isa.55:8-11, Gen.1:1-31, Acts 11:28]. All those who have truly associated with him have this testimony that whatever He says comes to pass because He cannot lie [Titus 1:2, Joshua 21:45].

His word together with His holiness brought about the entire creation. [See Heb.11:3, Ps.33:6, 9].

His word is a life giver because He quickens the dead and calls those things which are not as though they were. [See Romans 4:17-21, Heb.4:12, John 11:23-26]

His word is medicinal: It heals sicknesses, performs surgery, and recreates body parts where such parts have been damaged/destroyed like in the story of the man born blind in John 9. [Prov. 4:20-22; Ps.107:20; John 6:63; Matthew 8:5-13].

However, this blessing is meant for those who have entered into the covenant relationship of the New Birth with the Lord. The bible says that Christ in you is the hope of glory and this mystery was hidden from the foundation of the world for our glory. They are not hidden from us but for us to be able to discover them. If you desire this new birth experience so as to take advantage of what God has given us, you can do so right away by saying the following prayer out loud in faith and you will be saved and granted access to the mysteries of God that would enable you manifest His glory on earth. When Jesus was about to round off His mission on earth, he said he had brought glory to God by fulfilling His purpose. See John 17:4. If you want to be able to say the same thing when the time comes, please say the following prayer out loud and God would honor your faith:

Heavenly Father,

Have mercy on me a sinner. Today, I believe that Jesus died for me and you raised Him from the dead for my Justification. I therefore declare that Jesus Christ is my Saviour and Lord and from today, I renounce the fatherhood of Satan and embrace Jesus Christ as my Saviour and Lord. Thank you for this father in Jesus’ name!

Welcome To October 2015: Our Month Of Divine Manifestations

1Cor.12:7, Acts 2:1-4, Joel 2:28, John 2:11 & Rm.8:19

As we enter into the tenth month of the year, we celebrate the goodness of God for all He has done and is still doing in and through us. God has graciously named this our month of Divine Manifestations. This is so prophetic because when we liken it to the period of gestation preceding the delivery of a child; we can say that all that God has been processing in us for the past nine month will begin to speak this month. 

When we look at the meaning of manifestations in this context, we observe that manifestation means the disclosure of a presence or nature of someone. In other words, as a city set on a hill, we can no longer be hidden. We would shine as the light we are. In John chapter 2 when Jesus turns water into wine, he was said to have manifested his glory by that act. We also, would be used of God individually and corporately this month to demonstrate His glory. 

Also, we are told that God’s desire is to manifest Himself to us for our profiting. In 1Cor.12:7, we are made to see that the manifestation of the Holy Spirit is given to every man for their benefit. In the same way, God has blessed us with huge potential for our profits and that of others. This is why the entire creation of God wants us to manifest these potential so that they can be blessed. See Romans 8:19.

This month, God is set to use us to demonstrate His glory by working in us to will and to do of His good pleasure to bring about the release of His purpose on earth. This is a long desired breakthrough for the entire creation of God. The time has come for God to grant grace for us to enter into his plan to turn our world around into the glorious world He originally intended for it. 

In light of aligning with the plan of God for us, this month, we shall be looking at the theme: understanding the Glory of God. The reason for this is that our divine manifestation is not only aimed at glorifying God; it is rooted in the Glory of God. In John 15:1-8, the Lord makes it clear that we are to him what the branches of a vine are to the vine. Therefore, whatever kind of manifestation [fruit] is found in our lives must flow from Him because we cannot do anything without Him. See John 15:5. When we understand that the glory of God is all that God is and has, we would also learn that if we can learn to walk in His glory, we can bring heaven on earth in our lives because the atmosphere of heaven is governed by the glory of God. When we bring heaven on earth, we would be manifesting as the sons of God and not mere men [Psalm 82:6; John10:34]. Therefore, whatever cannot be found in heaven right now cannot be found in and around us. 

However, this blessing is meant for those who have entered into the covenant relationship of the New Birth with the Lord. Topic: The Labour that brings rest part 1. – Faith, hope and Love.

1Cor.13:13 (The Amplified Bible)

“And so faith, hope, love abide [faith – conviction and belief respecting man’s relation to God and divine things; hope – joyful and confident expectation of eternal salvation; love – true affection for God and man, growing out of God’s love for and in us], these three; but the greatest of these is love.”

From our text scripture here, whether or not we are laboring to enter into God’s rest shows in our lives in three qualities namely; our faith, our hope and our love life.

Faith and hope: Last month, we looked extensively at faith in relation to rest and refreshing. We saw what faith means and we also looked at some elements of faith and showed how faith can be a major player if we are going to enter into our rest and refreshing as intended by God. 

In Heb.11:1 we are told that faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Also, in Gal.5:6, we are told that faith works by love. When we put these scriptures together with our text scripture today, it becomes clear that the labour required to enter the rest of God would happen as we walk in faith and demonstrate the hope of our eternal salvation and the love of God towards God and men. 

How does this work? First, we need to walk in faith; a lifestyle ordered by the word of God or Godly values. However, for faith to be truly the faith of God, it hinges on the hope of our eternal salvation as shown us in the text above. As long as we stay joyfully expectant of our eternal salvation, our faith would have a resting place. Then for our faith to truly work to the point of leaving behind us an eternal legacy, we must demonstrate the third quality of walking in love. 

Since we have seen the quality of faith for rest extensively last month, we shall just look at the connection between hope and faith and how to release faith today. 

Faith and hope as exemplified by Abraham

Heb.11:8, Rom.4:1, 17-24 - From our texts here, God called Abraham to go to a place He would show him even though he did not know the place, he went ahead and trusted God to fulfill His promise. 

He hoped to get there and he demonstrated faith by taking steps to get there by actually obeying God to go. If he merely believed God without taking any action, his faith would have been questionable and there is no way he would have entered the Promised Land. 

Lessons:

1. When we first hear a promise of God, our hope is stirred up; we receive the word with joy like the person in the parable of the sower who could not bear fruit to perfection in Luke 8:13-14. This group of people hears the word and receives it in the hope of getting the goodies promised. However, they are not willing to pay the price of getting to the end of the journey of fulfilment. These kinds of people are easy prey to persecution and they become victims to the cares of this life and over time; they would lose the patience required to get to the end of the journey that would bring them the rest of fruitfulness which is the end of the promise. In 2Cor.4:13-14, Apostle Paul refers to those who would follow through to the end as people having another spirit; not the regular one like others. In verse 13, we see that apostle Paul and his company believed and therefore spoke in accordance with what they believed. The reason for this is seen in their hope of eternal salvation as shown in verse 14. 

For example, in Numbers 13-14, the popular opinion demonstrated by the evil report of ten spies and the unpopular opinion demonstrated by the “another spirit” of Joshua and Caleb. All of them hoped to get to the Promised Land from the beginning but only two of them paid the price of faith to get there. This takes us to the next way faith and hope works.

2. Faith speaks what is hoped for with full persuasion that what is believed must come to pass. In the case of Abraham in Romans 4:17-24, he kept giving glory to God by consistently saying what he hoped to see in the end and the result was that he entered his promised land of the father of many nations. This was his rest and he is still there until today.

3. Faith keeps moving on even when the hope of what is expected seem to be shaken by circumstances. No one ever enters rest who allows contrary circumstances to deter them from the direction of God. This is why Abraham believed in hope against hope. See Romans 4:18. Even when his body spoke against his hope of bearing a son with his old barren wife, he refused to stagger at the promise of God. He never allowed unbelief to rob him of the fulfilment of God’s promise. 

4. Even when hope seems taken away, faith will keep you going until the fulfilment of God’s promise. See Acts 27:20-25; in this account, all the people in the imminent shipwreck had lost hope until Paul received a word from the Lord that none of them would be lost in the shipwreck. This goes to tell you that faith keeps working even when all hope is lost. Therefore even though faith and hope work together, faith is stronger than hope because even when hope is taken away, faith can still help you take the journey to the end.  

5. Finally, whereas hope is the trigger for faith to start to grow, faith is what sustains hope even if hope is lost. The loss of hope would not necessarily result in the loss of the promised fulfilment as long as one maintains their faith in God’s word and act accordingly until the end. When you maintain your faith in God’s word, you are indeed operating in the rest of God because the means by which we enter our rest is mixing the word of God with faith or commensurate action based on the promise. See Heb.4:1-3, Rom.4:1-25.

Topic: What Rest is and why we need to enter rest

Text: Matthew 11:28-30, Heb.4:1-11.

Introduction: From our text scriptures above, we can easily glean what rest is from the mouth of the Lord and from the Letter to the Hebrew Church. Here we see the Lord making an open invitation to all who are weighed down and burdened to come to him to find rest and He also went on to provide the way they can find rest as learning of Him. However, our text in Hebrews makes us understand that much as we are invited to rest, not all who actually receive the invitation to rest get to the place of rest because of the major hindrance of unbelief. So while rest is assured by the Lord, there is a monster called unbelief that could stop those who allow it from entering into their rest. Last month, we took the time to look at faith and how it can help us get to our place of rest and refreshing. This month however, we shall be looking at how we can actually enter into rest in spite of our enemy – unbelief. First we must establish from scripture what the Lord means by rest and see some examples of people in the bible who entered into rest and check our lives to know in what areas we have also entered the rest of God.

First, Rest is preceded by a promise of God. The entire bible is a promise of God to people that if they would live in a certain way, He would commit to bring to pass all His intentions for them. See 2Tim.3:16-17, Ps.119:105, Joshua 1:8, Ps.1:1-3, Matthew 7:24-27.

Second, when we hear and receive the word of God, we prove our reception of the word by first doing what the word says. The first thing the word of God commands us to do is repent and become a part of the body of Christ. When we do this, we become saved and the journey into God’s promised land of all the good things of life and eventually an eternal abode with God commences. Acts2:26, 38-39; John 3:16-18.   

The good things of life are spiritual, soulish and physical. This is why in 3John 2, we are told that we are wished above all things prosperity and health even as our souls prosper. This sums up the good things of life. Man is spirit, soul and body; prosperity is required for all areas of life. See 1Thess.5:23. 

Thirdly, on the journey of life to our promised land of blessing with total wholeness; nothing broken and nothing missing, the first thing we must enjoy is spiritual prosperity. When we find rest here, rest in every other area of our lives is guaranteed. In John 17:3, we learn that we are actually experiencing eternal life when we know Jesus Christ and the father in our personal experience. It is impossible to know Him if you don’t hear His voice. Thus if you are really his sheep, you must pay the price to hear his voice through learning. Remember, He says “learn of me…” see Mt.11:29, John10:27, Rm.8:14, 16.

Fourthly, whatever you hear from God by His Holy Spirit and His written word is what you will be tested on to know if you qualify for the promised land of blessing or not. See Heb.4:1-3, Matthew 7:24-27. You qualify when you hold on to what God says till it comes to pass for you [Heb.10:23, 36-39]. Those who failed this test were those who did not mix the word with faith [Heb.4:1-3]. The way we mix the word with faith is by doing what the word says.  

Some examples of those who entered rest in the bible include Abraham and Sarah who were promised children and received the promise of a son after 25 years and then had to die not having received the promise of becoming parents to many nations. However, that promise is actualized today several hundreds of years later. This is because the promises of God are usually transgenerational. We must therefore raise our children to follow in our steps to continue to walk with God. Another example is Joseph who had to go through the process of slavery to obtain the promise and He did enter rest by first walking in the word of God and later rising from the prison to the palace overnight. 

When John the Baptist was born, it was said concerning him by prophecy that He would be the forerunner of the most high. The process to get there made a hermit of him and the day He baptized the Lord, he entered the Promised Land. See Luk.1:76-77, Matthew 3:11-17.

Why do we need rest?

Rest is like giving birth to a baby that is conceived. If a pregnant woman does not give birth to the baby for instance, she cannot be relieved of the weight and could even be killed from the abnormality. This is why many of the children of Israel died in the wilderness as they could not deliver their promise because of unbelief. The place of rest is the place of fulfilment, rewards, comfort and refreshing. When God finished making the world, He rested on the 7th day and was refreshed. See Ex.31:17.

You cannot keep fighting battles without victory. Therefore rest is the place of victory. As we learn of the Lord on a daily basis, everything will eventually culminate in victory for us. See Rev.2-3. 

Conclusion: What has God promised you? Whatever you are going through now is the process by which you will get there; so don’t give up, keep trusting in the Lord; it will come to pass. 

Welcome to September 2015: Our Month of Divine Rest

Texts: Mt.11:28-30 and Heb.4:1-11

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 

For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” - Matthew 11:28-30

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. 

For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. 

Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. – Heb.4:9-11.

God’s great heart is being revealed again this month as He has graciously declared this month to be our month of Divine Rest. To get a clear picture of what God is saying to us this month, we must understand rest from God’s perspective here. Rest is not just to take a rest in sleep or from any kind of work. Rest here is referring to a state where we cease trying to accomplish things on our own or in our human strength (without involving God). For instance to receive enduring riches, you will have to stop trying to get it by human means and turn to God’s way [Prov.34:4]. To live a holy life, you will have to mortify the deeds of the flesh through the Holy Spirit or else, your self-efforts would only lead to more and more frustrations as holy living is not humanly possible [Rom.8:13]. This is the frustration the Psalmist observed among God’s creation when He declared in Psalm 127:1 that except the Lord builds a house, they labour in vain that build it and also, except the Lord watches over a city, the security men labour in vain trying to do so. 

This, to the entire human race means one thing; except we reconnect with our Creator God, all the efforts we put into trying to make our lives worthwhile would best be described as exercises in futility. Since the fall of man through the sin of Adam, man has been under the curse of perpetual struggles. This is because of the curse of God that man would always have to struggle to provide for himself [Gen.3:15-19]. 

With the coming of Jesus Christ into the world, the entire creation of God received the fulfilment of God’s promise to bruise the head of the ancient serpent [also known as Satan the devil] and therefore freedom from the curse if they would believe in Jesus Christ and receive God’s gift of eternal life. See Gen.3:15; Rev.12:9-11; John 3:16-18 and 2Cor.5:21. 

This is why in our first text of scriptures; we see the Lord inviting mankind to come to him to find rest from their struggles and pains through learning from Him. Thus the first step into rest is to come to Jesus Christ with one’s whole heart. When this is done, we become saved from sin and the evils of this world. Then we need to take the next step which is to Learn of Him. Salvation is God’s free gift that grants us access to eternal life. However, to enjoy the total benefits of salvation, we must be discipled by the Lord. This is why in John 8:30-31 Jesus said to those Jews who had believed on Him that they had to continue in His word until they know the truth so that they would enjoy the freedom that He alone can give and when He sets free, we would indeed be free. 

Further in our second text in Hebrews 4, we are made to understand that rest is not automatic with the issuing of the promise, it happens when people come to the point of being fully persuaded of the promise that they demonstrate the spirit of faith that enables them obtain the promise. This is why we are enjoined to labour to enter into rest. 

The question is what kind of labour do we need to engage in to really enter into rest. This is what we are going to be looking at this month of Divine Rest. However, like we saw earlier, the first step towards rest in this context is to receive the free gift of God’s salvation if you are yet to. If you do not, then the struggles would continue. Should you wish to cease from your struggles, you can do so right away by saying the following prayer out loud and God will set you free immediately then you can become part of those who can enter into the rest of God:

Heavenly Father, 

Have mercy on me a sinner. Today, I believe that Jesus died for me and you raised Him from the dead for my Justification. I therefore declare that Jesus Christ is my Saviour and Lord and from today, I renounce the fatherhood of Satan and embrace Jesus Christ as my Saviour and Lord. Thank you for this father in Jesus’ name!

Amen.
