Messages for June
2018: Our Month of the Holy Spirit
Message for Sunday 24th June, 2018
Theme: Understanding the Ministry and
Gift of the Holy Spirit
Topic: Some
Reasons why Every Believer should speak/pray in other tongues
Introduction: So far we have been learning a lot from this
great theme of understanding the Ministry and Gift of the Holy Spirit. We have
learnt who the Holy Spirit is and why He came. We also saw the gifts and the
fruit of the spirit and we emphasized that while some of the gifts could be
counterfeited by the enemy to deceive, the fruit of the spirit cannot be
counterfeited because it is a bye product of cultivating the nature of God in
us. Bearing the fruit of the spirit involves the cooperation of the believer in
order to cultivate divine nature which is the real work of the believer
cooperating with the word of God and the Holy Spirit in their lives. Today, we
shall be looking at the bible to see some reasons why every believer must speak
in other tongues.
Some reasons why every believer must speak in other
tongues: In Acts 1:8 when
the Lord promised us the gift of the Holy Spirit, He said we shall receive
power after the Holy Spirit is come upon us and this power would enable us to
become witnesses for him. When the Holy Spirit came, He brought us the power to
be witnesses with the manifestation of speaking in other tongues for the
following reasons among others:
1.
It is the initial proof that we have been filled with the Holy Spirit.
See Acts 2:4; 10:44-46 and 19:1-6.
2.
It is a sign that a person believes in the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus
promised in Mark 16:17 that certain signs would follow those that believe in
Him and the first sign He mentions is that we would speak in new tongues. See
Acts 2:4.
3.
It is God’s will for us because it provided the much needed intimacy with
God that He has always desired to have with us. See 1Cor.14:5 and 28.
4.
Tongues is for spiritual edification. In any situation you find yourself,
pray in tongues and your spirit by the Holy Spirit will rise up to the occasion
to deliver divine results to you. See 1Cor.14:2 and 4, Jude 1:20 and
1Thess.5:17.
5.
Tongues keep us in constant remembrance of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling
presence. This affects the way we live our lives and enables us to maintain a
spiritual environment of the cool of the day like Adam first had with in the
Garden. See Gen.3:8 and Jn.14:16-17. When we live fully conscious of God’s
presence, we honor him and if we do so, God would honor us in return. See
1Sam.1:30 and Jn.12:26.
6.
Praying in tongues is how the Holy Spirit empowers us to pray when we do
not know what we should pray for as we ought. As our helper, a major help we
get from the Holy Spirit is the help we get in prayer when we do not know what
we should pray for as we ought. See Rm.8:26 and 1Cor.14:14.
7.
Praying in tongues stimulates faith. It enables us to stay in the
fullness of the spirit and walk in the supernatural. Eph.5:18-19 teaches us to
stay full of the Holy Spirit and not be sensual. See Jude 1:20 and Philippians
3:3.
8.
Praying in tongues keeps us free from worldliness. See 1Cor.14:27-28 and
2 and 1Cor.2:11. Here you will learn the distinction between giving a message
in tongues and praying in tongues. In the former case, the message would have
to be interpreted by either the one who gives it or another person in the place
with the gift of interpretation. See 1Cor.14:12-13.
9.
Praying in tongues is the Supernatural therapy for cleansing and release.
Praying by the Holy Spirit within us empowers us for Holy living because He is
Holy. God in turn energizes us to live holy for Him. Rm.8:26; 1Cor.14:14 and
1Cor.2:11-16.
10.
Praying in tongues enables us to
pray for the unknown. It provides a means of praying about issues no one thinks
about or even knows. Thus praying through us for things which no one thinks
about or even knows. It even has the ability to expose and destroy all the
secret evil done against you by the wicked. See Rm.8:26.
11.
Praying in tongues gives refreshing. See Isa.28:11-12. The rest and refreshing referred to in this
passage of scripture is praying in unknown tongues.
12.
Tongues enables us to give thanks properly. Sometimes we are so grateful
to God that the mere chant of thank you would be insufficient to express
ourselves. This is when this gift becomes necessary in our expression of
gratitude. See 1Cor.14:16-17.
13.
Speaking in tongues helps to tame the tongue. This is a giant step
towards fully yielding our body to the Holy Spirit for His use because the
greatest discipline we can express is that of our tongue. When we are able to
discipline our tongues, we can protect our lives thereby. See Jas.3.
14.
This is the means by which we use our little faith to operate the great
faith of God. 1Cor.14:2 and Mk.11:22-23.
We shall stop here for today; but
please let me emphasize that the Holy Spirit is only given as a gift by God to
the redeemed. If you are not born again yet you are not redeemed but I have
good news for you; you can get born again right away by saying the following
prayer out loud in faith and you will be born again. If you want to, you can
take the step right away by saying the following prayer out loud in faith and
you will be saved:
Heavenly Father,
Have mercy on me a sinner. Today, I believe that Jesus
died for me and you raised Him from the dead for my Justification. I therefore
declare that Jesus Christ is my Saviour and Lord and from today, I renounce the
fatherhood of Satan and embrace Jesus Christ as my Saviour and Lord. Thank you
for this father in Jesus’ name! Amen.
