Welcome to
the month of July 2018: Our Month of Excellence
“Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and
knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard
sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the
king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the
interpretation.” Dan.5:12
As we enter into the
second half of the year, many would currently be taking inventory of this year
from the beginning to the end of its first half today. Some would be very
satisfied with their reports and others would not be depending on their results
and attitudes. However, there is one truth we must all bear in mind and that is
that we did not begin this year and get to this point of the year by our own
power or ability. We all got here by the grace of God; thus whether we feel we
have succeeded or failed, we must always remember the God factor and remember
that the best attitude we can have at a time like this is one of gratitude.
So far in life I have
learnt to be thankful for what God has given to me rather than being disturbed
about what I think I should have but don’t because I learnt from God’s word
that godliness with contentment is great gain. Further, I have also come to an
awareness that true excellence is impossible without intimacy with the Holy
Spirit. He is the Spirit of excellence and therefore to demonstrate true
excellence is impossible without being associated with Him. From our text
above, we see the example of Daniel who was acclaimed by royalty in Babylon in
his lifetime as being one with an excellent spirit because according to them,
the spirit of the Holy God with him.
Another person who
demonstrated excellence in the word of God was Joseph. Concerning him, this is
what Pharaoh had to say of him:
“… can we find such a one
as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?
… in as much as God has
shown you all this, there is no one as discerning and wise as you. You shall be
over my house and all my people shall be ruled according to your word; only
with regard to the throne will I be greater than you.” Gen.41:38-41 nkjv
Also, about the Lord Jesus
Christ, we read that he increased in wisdom and stature and in favour with God
and men when he was still only twelve years old because of the life of intimacy
he had with God as was later disclosed to us in his statement in John 5:19-20,
30 etc. that he does nothing except what He sees the father doing and that He
says nothing except what the father tells Him to say. We also lean from his
daily prayer habit disclosed to us in Mark 1:35 that he did not take His intimate
relationship with God lightly. Why was He like this? He knew that He could only
stay connected to God by sticking closely to Him. It is only then that the life
of God could flow through Him in this wicked world even though He was God’s
Son. See Lk.2:52
Everyone who is born of
God in this world is faced with the constant challenge of remaining connected
to their source of salvation – Jesus Christ. God saw ahead that this would be
the case so He promised to and sent us the Holy Spirit to help us on behalf of
Christ to stay connected to Him. This is because if we are not so positioned,
the wicked will try to wrest our salvation from us through fruitlessness.
To protect us from this
adversity, the Lord declared the way to freedom from this world and its ways in
John 8:31-32; He said:
“… If you abide in my
word, you are my disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth and the truth
shall make you free.”
Further, in John 15:1-5 He
makes us understand that the importance of abiding in him cannot be over
flogged because it is only when we abide in Him that we can be fruitful. When
we realize this, we are motivated to do everything we have to do to stay
connected because indeed, without him we cannot bear any fruit. Meanwhile, it
is God’s will for us not only to bear fruit but to bear much fruit. See John
15:8 – He said that when we bear much fruit, it qualifies us as His disciples.
In light of the importance
of being a disciple to be able to bear much fruit, we can see that the spirit
of excellence would flow freely through a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The people we looked at their examples in the Old Testament both show that they
were disciples of some greater ones before them and it helped them become the
excellent men they were. Joseph was discipled by his father Jacob. Daniel was
an ardent follower of Jeremiah and he was able to leave behind an excellent
legacy like the wise men from the east who visited the baby Jesus hundreds of
years later.
This month, we shall thus
be learning discipleship with the aim of knowing how we can be led by the Holy
Spirit and God’s word to see how we can become true Disciples of Christ while
still in submission to His true disciples. Theme: understanding the Privileges of being a true disciple of the Lord Jesus
Christ.
It is my heart felt prayer
that at the end of this month each of us would have learnt how to enlist and
walk in this great boat called Discipleship and started living the life of one.
Meanwhile discipleship is
only for the believer in Christ; all who are not yet born again cannot enter
this boat. Thus if you are reading this blog now and you are not yet born again
and you desire to take on the responsibility of becoming a disciple, you can
get saved right away by saying the following prayer out loud in faith and you
will be saved:
Heavenly Father,
Have mercy on me a sinner. Today, I believe that Jesus died for me and you
raised Him from the dead for my Justification. I therefore declare that Jesus
Christ is my Saviour and Lord and from today, I renounce the fatherhood of
Satan and embrace Jesus Christ as my Saviour and Lord. Thank you for this
father in Jesus’ name! Amen.
