2018: Our Month of the Holy Spirit
Message for Sunday 3rd June, 2018
Theme: Understanding the Ministry and
Gift of the Holy Spirit
Topic: Who the
Holy Spirit is and why He is on earth today
Introduction: once again, I welcome you to the month of June
2018: Our month of the Holy Spirit. In this month, we are going to be examining
this great subject of the Holy Spirit with the intent of enabling us to understand
how to walk with Him to fulfill our individual and corporate destinies. We are
so thankful to God that we are not left in the dark as to who He is and what
His mission to us on earth is. To this end, today, we shall be looking at who
the Holy Spirit is and why He is on earth today.
Who the Holy Spirit is:
The answer to the question of who the Holy Spirit
is seeks to clarify who He is and ease us of the confusion that has been generated
by the devil for centuries over the human race to steal from them, kill and
destroy them. The following is therefore a list of some truths that show us who
the Holy Spirit is:
1.
He is God. He is the first of the
Godhead the bible mentions. He is coequal with the Father and the Son. See the
amplified version of Gen.1:26 & Gen.1:2. See also Mt.28:19; 3:16-17 and
1Jn.5:7.
2.
He is the
Lord: Compare
Ezek.36:22-26 with Heb.10:15-17.
3.
He is the
Spirit of Christ: 1Pet.1:11
and Romans 8:9
4.
He is the
Spirit of Truth: Jn.16:13
and Jn.15:36.
5.
He is another
Comforter in place of Jesus Christ: This word comforter has its root in the Greek word Parakletos which means
an intercessor, a consoler, an advocate and a comforter. Whereas allos is also
from the Greek root word which means another of the same kind. See Jn.14:15-16.
6.
He is the
promise of the Father: The father
through the laws and the Prophets had promised the day of the Holy Spirit for
so long that the people were now so used to calling Him the promise of the
father. Acts 1:4-5 in the Amplified version of the bible.
7.
The comforter: The word translated comforter is the same word as
intercessor, strengthener, advocate, standby etc. Jn.14:26 of the Amplified
Bible translation.
8.
The teacher: He is the greatest teacher in
the universe. If He teaches you anything, you cannot forget it and He will give
you understanding. 1Jn.2:27 and Cor.2:12-14.
9.
He is
referred to as a person in the male gender in Jn.16:7-14
10.
He is co-equal with the Father and the Son and
shares the same nature: This truth is brought out clearly in Matthew’s account of the Baptism of
the Lord in Matthew 13:16-17, the story of the creation in Genesis 1:26 citing
the Amplified version of the Bible especially.
Why is the Holy Spirit on Earth?
In other words, what is the Holy Spirit on earth to accomplish? The Holy
Spirit is the principal Executive of God’s program on Earth today. He is here
to accomplish the following for mankind generally and the Church in particular:
1.
Conviction: None of us
humans were physical witnesses of the Lord when He walked on the sands of time
like His disciples were but God wanted us to testify on His behalf so He came
in the person of the Holy Spirit who knows it all to dwell in us and enable us
to be able to speak on behalf of the Lord with conviction. He thus convicts the
world of sin, righteousness, and judgement. His conviction will enable a sinner
to repent; it would enable a person who repents to know that they are now
righteous and enables the world to know that the enemy of our souls has been
defeated and judged. See Jn.16:7-11.
2.
He enhances our spiritual capacity: Spiritual truths are too high for natural man. For us
to be able to comprehend spiritual truths we must become spiritual. It is the
business of the Holy Spirit to help us become spiritual so that He can teach us
and lead us. Jn.16:12-13 and 1Cor.2:14.
3.
He reveals the future to us: This enables us to know the plans and purposes of God
for our lives and we then align ourselves to it. There is nothing better than
knowing God’s blue print for our lives. Jn.16:13.
4.
He empowers us to know and do Ministry: Having accomplished His mission in the
first coming, the Lord was about to ascend to heaven; He called His disciples
together and gave them some last minute instruction in Acts 1:4 thus:
“And, being assembled together
with them, commanded them that
they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father,
which, saith he, ye have heard
of me.”
See also Acts 1:8 where He clarified the
reason He gave them the instruction to wait for the promise of the father.
We shall draw the curtains here today even though there is more to say on
this topic. We shall continue speaking about why the Holy Spirit came next week
God willing. Meanwhile, anyone reading this blog that is not yet born again
cannot receive the Holy Spirit because He is sent to the Church and to become a
part of the body of Christ, you must be born again. If you want to take this
plunge, please say the following prayer out loud in faith and you will be born
again and eligible to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit:
Heavenly Father,
Have mercy on me a sinner. Today, I believe that Jesus
died for me and you raised Him from the dead for my Justification. I therefore
declare that Jesus Christ is my Saviour and Lord and from today, I renounce the
fatherhood of Satan and embrace Jesus Christ as my Saviour and Lord. Thank you
for this father in Jesus’ name! Amen.
